The Concept of Character Structures through the Ages

The concept of functional unity and character structures, rooted in the idea of a biological drive, is inextricably linked to Wilhelm Reich and Alexander Lowen and has been an important point of reference for body-psychotherapists from a wide range of schools. The associated character structure model is characterized by the link between bodily events and (counter)transference phenomena, i.e., the unconscious in the relationship. With the increasing focus on early disorders, the model was pushed into the background. This essay attempts to reconnect it with the pending questions of modern body-psychotherapy – and thus to follow Alexander Lowen’s claim that new questions also entail new methods of thinking and treatment. This claim is supported by the growing realization that early bodily experiences in the relationship with our first caregivers determine the stability of our personality and our later self-regulation abilities. The essay theoretically supports an intersubjective therapy concept, as is widespread in modern Bioenergetic Analysis, and localizes it in the character-structural concepts.

  • Personality structures and the associated states of suffering are always a reflection of social conditions and challenges.

  • In their developmental history, Lowen’s character structures follow the developmental requirements of early childhood. Lowen speaks of a schizoid, oral, psychopathic, masochistic and rigid character structure. Following Reinhold Dietrich, the structures can be described in a less pathologizing way as thinking-oriented, need-oriented, control-oriented, burden-oriented and performance-oriented character structures.
  • Infant and attachment research suggests a very early start to the development of character structures. Later, the structures are consolidated through a cognitive superstructure.
  • Early disorders and a structural diagnosis according to OPD-2 can also be mapped in terms of the character structure. Here, the body-based approach of Bioenergetic Analysis and the functional unity of the bodily and mental unconscious offer an extended perspective.
  • An intersubjective understanding of the relationship in Bioenergetic Analysis makes it easier to look at the client’s early disorders.
  • A better orientation in the interactional matrix becomes possible if character-structural themes are understood as relationship themes.

  1. What do you know about your character-structural fixations? Where do you notice them? What are your postures, breathing patterns and movement impulses like in stressful situations? Where do you experience tension and restricted movement?
  2. What are the indicators for you personally that you are currently experiencing a structural collapse? What bodily or emotional warning signs are there?
  3. Which relationship constellations are you looking for? Which constellations do you experience as conflictual? Which ones do you experience as destabilizing?
  4. What possibilities for your own bodily stabilization are you aware of? Where do you still need to develop something new?
