Neurobiological Foundations of Self-Development
Volume 2 Part 1: Psychodynamic Theory for Bioenergetic Practice Chapter 1.1

Neurobiological Foundations of Self-Development

This article summarizes the key findings of neurobiology and Neuropsychoanalysis in relation to psychotherapy and self-development. First, the neurobiological foundations of the human nervous system are presented, with the nerve cell as the smallest unit, its central and peripheral parts and its sensorimotor and autonomic fibers. Then, neuropsychoanalytical findings are presented which emphasize the importance of synchronized eye contact between infants and primary caregivers for the development of affect regulation and attachment. Finally, the self is considered from a neurobiological perspective and new knowledge on consciousness and affects is explained.

  • In early childhood, eye and body contact as well as interactive communication between the infant and its primary attachment figures, which is characterized by affective exchange processes, promote the maturation of the right hemisphere of the brain.
  • The right orbitofrontal cortex houses the neurobiological substrates of an early emotionally charged attachment dialogue and affect regulation.
  • In this right orbitofrontal cortex, Neurobiological researchers such as Allan N. Schore and Mark Solms also locate the sense of self, Freud’s unconscious, the implicit-procedural memory and Bowlby’s Inner Working Model.
  • Intersubjective processes such as empathy and (counter)transference phenomena are also associated with this brain region.
  • Each affect works through its own neuronal network.
  • Consciousness is not primarily a performance of the cerebrum, but arises in the form of affects from deeper layers of the brain.
  • We feel what we are.
